Dr Sampathkumar Rangasamy awarded with Madras Research Foundation – Distinguished Alumnus Award

He bagged the award for his research in field of diabetes research

Dr Mohan’s Diabetes Specialities Centre – Madras Diabetes Research Foundation recently honoured Dr Sampathkumar Rangasamy, Assistant Professor at the Neurogenomics Division, Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen), Phoenix, Arizona, USA, with the first Madras Research Foundation – Distinguished Alumnus Award. The award is given to an alumnus who has done exceptionally well in their areas of research. He was awarded for his research in the field of diabetes research.

This is the first edition of the Madras Diabetes Research Foundation-Distinguished Alumnus Award and was established to recognise the outstanding work of former students who did their Phd at the centre and have achieved laurels in their specific field of interest, post their PhD.

Commenting on the award, Dr V Mohan, Chairman, MDRF and Dr Mohan’s Diabetes Specialities Centre said “We are extremely delighted to honour Dr Sampathkumar Rangasamy for his outstanding research work in the field of diabetes. The students graduating from MDRF with PhD degree are of the highest calibre and many have reached positions of eminence in academic and research institutions, industry or public sector, both in India and abroad.”

“MDRF has, for a long time, felt the need to recognise its alumni who have distinguished themselves in their field of expertise and in turn have inspired many upcoming students. With this in mind we have instituted the Madras Diabetes Research Foundation-Distinguished Alumnus Award (MDRF-DAA)” said Dr M Balasubramanyam, Dean of Research Studies, MDRF.

Soon after completing his MSc in Erode (Bharathidasan University), Dr Sampathkumar joined MDRF in the year 2001 as a junior research fellow and started his PhD work under the supervision of Dr Balasubramanyam. He was awarded the PhD degree from the University of Madras. During 2006 to 2014, he had very successful stint as a scientist working at several institutions of eminence in the US such as Barbara David Centre for Childhood Diabetes, University of Colorado (Denver), University of New Mexico and Barrow Neurological Institute (Phoenix). In the year 2014, he also became an independent scientist. Currently he is working as an Assistant Professor at the Neurogenomics Division, Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen), Phoenix, Arizona, USA. While continuing his studies on diabetes, diabetic retinopathy, neurodevelopmental and neurovascular disorders, Dr Sampathkumar is also a team member at Center for Rare Childhood Disorders working on breakthrough treatment modalities to give hope to hundreds of children and their families. What is more laudable is that Dr. Sampathkumar Rangasamy conquered type 1 diabetes which he developed when he was 13 years of age.
