Rajesh Nair, Vice President, Medirays Corporation, speaks to Prabhat Prakash about the journey of Medirays from a service organisation to a production organisation

How has Medirays evolved with time since inception?

We started off with the sale of used and refurbished devices in the market. We initially were a service organisation but we wanted to provide state-of-the-art services. To put this in into action, we created our own facility. The facility creation was out of necessity because the refurbished market is a very unorganised sector. Today, our facility is capable of providing end-to-end service with full quality checks done in-house. Now our focus is on new equipment and for the last few years, we have tried to collaborate with companies for new equipment. Today, we have a collaboration with Sinovision for CT scanners and WDM for MRIs, we also plan to implement the Make in India initiative. As of now, we will be assembling the products in India.

Are you still into the refurbished market, what are the challenges faced?

We are still into the refurbished market but mainly for the 1.5 Tesla MRI and a few models of CT scanners. Since the implementation of the AERB regulation, we have stopped importing the machines that have been phased out by our organisation. In the refurbished market, a product just cannot be bought and installed. There are various process and regulations involved. The main challenge is to get good technicians to install and maintain the machines. We have overcome that challenge by investing in our facility where all the quality checks and maintenance is done through trained technicians.

From service to production, how are your products different from established brands?

For us, the X-factor is going to be the placements of our products. CT scanners are all about applications. India is a huge market and customers look at companies that offer quality goods along with good and prompt services and are easy to work with.
