The need for orienting medical students to technology and its application in the medical field was stressed upon by all participants
The ANBAI Teachers Day 2018 was held at the JN Tata Auditorium, Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore, on the September 22, 2018. The daylong event was attended by over 450 delegates representing the medical fraternity and from other invited organisations.
Following the inauguration of Teachers Day by the MCI President, Dr Jayshree Mehta & NBE President, Dr Abhijat Sheth, in the presence of ANBAI President, Dr Alexander Thomas & Organising Chairman, Dr Sudarshan Ballal & Dr CN Manjunath, Director, Jayadeva Institute of Cardiology, the events that followed were well attended and the interaction with the participants was meaningful.
One of the panel discussions was on ‘Medical Education – The need to look beyond’.
Some of the distinguished panelists who participated in the discussion are K Raghu, Past President, The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI); Prof Dr. Raghunath, Professor of Corporate Strategy and Policy, Chair, Centre for Corporate Governance and Citizenship, Indian Institute of Management; Bengaluru; Prof Biman Bagchi, Dean, Faculty of Science, Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru; (Dr) Fr George Edayadiyil CMI, Chancellor, Christ University, Bengaluru, etc.The discussion was moderated by Dr Rajashekaran, President-Elect ANBAI, Chairman, Department of Orthopaedics & Spine Surgery, Ganga Hospital, Coimbatore.
The need for orienting medical students to technology and its application in the medical field was stressed upon by all participants. It was also suggested that medical students should be groomed under the direct mentorship of a senior distinguished professional. One of the important observations made was that India has a wealth of valuable medical data by virtue of its huge population, which should be appropriately made use of to plan strategies for tackling the health issues of our country. Initiating the younger generation to develop an interest in research and to train them as proficient teachers were also stressed upon.
The highlight of the day was the awards ceremony wherein 10 distinguished teachers & institutions were awarded for their contribution towards furthering the cause of Post Graduate Medical Education in the country. The Governor of Karnataka, Vajubhai Rudabhai Vala, while giving away the awards also acknowledged the valuable services of the medical fraternity and in particulars expressed his appreciation to all the awardees.
The Governor also congratulated Dr Prathap C Reddy, Founder & Chairman, Apollo Hospitals Group, who was awarded the distinguished Life Time Achievement Awards for his contribution towards the Post Graduate Medical Education in the country.
