Mumbai-based Nanavati Super Speciality Hospital launched a virtual holistic care programme – ‘Parkinson’s Support Group’ to guide patients with Parkinson’s on tips for their holistic care. Amidst the low availability of medical care during the COVID-19 pandemic, the programme offers comprehensive, individualised and holistic support that addresses a patient’s clinical, physical, diet prudence and not to forget emotional needs. The programme is being conducted on the virtual platform and witnesses a regular presence of around 70 patients, as per a statement from the hospital.

The aim of the programme is to address the myriad challenges that patients with Parkinson’s face and to provide holistic care to patients, helping them to understand the approach towards a better lifestyle. Despite Parkinson’s being a chronic ailment, its treatment entails not merely medication but a holistic approach that caters to even non-medical aspects of the disease. Even though movement disabilities are the most pre-eminent symptoms of Parkinson’s, they get coupled with more non-motor symptoms over time.

Considering the various non-motor difficulties that the patients face, the programme reporetedly comprises a series of sessions by experts who discuss various aspects of Parkinson’s and how to deal with them. These sessions are led by psychologists and psychiatrists, physiotherapists, dieticians and nutritionists, sleep therapists, speech and swallowing therapists and urologists to deal with various aspects of lifestyle changes required as part of the treatment plan.
