The NCD work-group will be a multi-faceted focused group that will provide opportunities to professionals in developing innovative approaches to surveillance for NCDs

The International Society for Disease Surveillance (ISDS), an independent nonprofit professional organisation based in US, launched a ‘trans-disciplinary NCD work-group for clinical, academic and public health professionals’ at the inauguration of the Healthcare and NCD Conference co-organised by Public Health Foundation of India (PHFI) at the BioAsia Conference 2015.

The NCD work-group will be a multi-faceted focused group that will provide opportunities to professionals in developing innovative approaches to surveillance for NCDs. The goals of the ISDS NCD Workgroup are to see problem spaces in NCDs surveillance and possible solutions in a new light; interact with associates across nations and sectors with similar interests; identify new opportunities for research collaborations; accomplish together what could not be achieved alone, and turn ideas into action. The ISDS membership links professionals to a community of 1000+ experts across 50+ countries globally, on the cutting edge of surveillance practice, research, and technology. The membership is free for professionals from the World Bank list of Low and Middle Income Countries (LMICs).

In his address, Dr Vivek Singh, VP, ISDS, emphasised the urgent need for trans-disciplinary and trans-sectoral collaboration for tackling the challenges posed by NCDs to population health and health systems in LMICs and globally. “The launch of the ISDS NCD work-group will facilitate a trans-disciplinary and trans-sectoral movement for NCD management especially in the LMICs and globally. The work group will provide an opportunity to health professionals across disciplines and sectors to converge, collaborate, and contribute towards NCD surveillance. The launch of this workgroup is a renewed global effort to bring together key sectoral partners to contribute towards development of innovative approaches, strategies, and plans for NCD surveillance in order to guide the efforts for achievement of goals of the Global Action Plan for NCDs 2013-2020.”

The mission of the ISDS is to improve population health by advancing the science and practice of disease surveillance to support timely and effective prevention and response by a skilled public health workforce.
