Hospital honours three samaritans for their crucial role in ensuring timely medical care for patients who suffered from a stroke

Gleneagles Global Hospitals, Bengaluru organised a marathon in the city to drive awareness on stroke. The event was executed by ‘Cheetah – The Runners’, a running group consisting of 35 doctors from BGS Gleneagles Global Hospitals. This World Stroke Day, ‘Cheetah-The Runners’ collaborated with RunAddicts Group (Rajarajeshwari Nagar) and other stroke support groups to bring together around 600 runners including 10 elite runners from Sports Authority of India (SAI).‘Cheetah-The Runners’ has been actively participating in various national and international marathons and have in the past promoted awareness on stroke through similar marathons.

The marathon was flagged off at 6 am from BEML Layout, Rajarajeshwari Nagar. Manju – ex corporator, Rajarajeshwari ward and Dr G T Subhash, Ex Dean, Bangalore Medical College and President, Bangalore stroke group were present at the flag off. The race took place in three categories: 10 K run, 5 K run and 3 K walk.

To commemorate the day, stroke survivors also came together to share their inspirational journeys, in the hope that it would provide support to others in similar need. The hospital also used this opportunity to honour three samaritans, Madhu, Boraiah, Sumangala, with the title of being the winners of Good Samaritans award, who played a crucial role in saving a person’s life after stroke.

These samaritans ensured that these patients were admitted at the hospital within the golden hour and that timely treatment was made available thereby minimising overall damage as a result of stroke. The hospital also hosted a ‘coffee with a stroke expert’ session, which allowed for the public to interact with stroke experts in order to facilitate awareness and clarify myths on stroke.

Dr Suryanarayana Sharma, Consultant, Neurologist & Stroke Specialist, Head – Division of Stroke & Neurosonology, BGS Gleneagles Global Hospitals said, “This year, world stroke day 2018 is celebrated with the theme of “#up again after stroke” to reinstate hope among stroke survivors. Every minute after stroke, 1.9million brain cells (neurons) die and 84 km of nerve fibres get permanently damaged. If patients are brought to the hospital within the golden hour of onset of stroke (4.5hrs), various advanced stroke interventions like intravenous injection of clot bursting medications, angioplasty of blood vessels to the brain can reverse the impact of stroke resulting in a good clinical outcome. Awareness about stroke and acting fast is the key to good stroke outcome. To win a marathon or to win over stroke; seconds count, minutes matter.”

Shailaja Suresh, CEO, Gleneagles Global Hospitals, Bengaluru added, “Gleneagles Global Hospitals has been active in raising awareness on strokes within the Bengaluru community. In fact, we have our own stroke support group, which helps survivors cope with life after stroke. Due to increased stress levels and sedentary lifestyles, strokes have been on the rise. Through this marathon, we not only hope to raise awareness on the issue but also instil the need for adopting a healthier lifestyle, especially in the younger generations. Building awareness is an active step in avoiding new cases of this ailment. It is our constant endeavour to increase awareness on issues faced by our communities so that we can effectively manage this calamity.”
