By nurturing new and innovative approaches to care, the healthcare industry is bound to impact global healthcare scenario and make it easily affordably accessible to masses

India has come a really long way in the healthcare space — transforming from traditional healthcare infrastructure running on older technologies, siloed information and cumbersome networks to digitally interacting with a doctor sitting miles away on your smartphone. This massive transformation has been enabled with rapid IT innovations in healthcare improving doctor-patient experience.

According to Cisco’s 2016 ‘The Digitisation of the Healthcare Industry: Using Technology to Transform Care’ report, digitisation has the potential to affect every aspect of care delivery and operations. Digitisation enables smarter choices and better utilisation of time and resources, allowing people to spend more time on patient interaction at the point of care.

Cisco, specialising in healthcare innovation since over two decades, works with over 17,000 healthcare organisations across 118 countries to bring affordable and secure healthcare services to the masses. With its array of solutions like the Connected Mobile Experiences (CMX), Cisco Unified Communications and Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI), it aims to enable organisations with remote care and collaboration, personalise patient experience and simplify clinical workflows.

A case in point would be the Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Institute & Research Centre (RGCI &RC), a cancer research institute in the country, which deployed Cisco’s Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) solutions, developed using NVIDIA Grid Computing to centrally monitor user-activity and improve service delivery to patients.

With its wide offering in the areas of remote care and collaboration, personalised patient experiences, optimising workplace efficiencies and facilitating security and compliance, Cisco is helping the healthcare industry expand its reach and make healthcare more affordable through its innovative technologies.

Interestingly, the healthcare sector has been one of the fastest adopters of new age technologies with an increasing number of institutions adopting new technologies to keep pace with the digital disruptions like telemedicine etc. Also, with the changing demographics of patients looking for fast and convenient healthcare services, institutions are betting big on transformative collaborative technologies.

Further, digital transformation also moves patient care to a new level of intimacy and information. “In the coming years, millions of patients will undergo their first virtual care appointment, utilise their first wearable wellness app, and use their smartphones as a diagnostic tool,” points out Cisco’s healthcare report.
