The objective of this camp was to provide guidance to the patients on newer and affordable techniques for stoma care
ConvaTec organised a special stoma care camp in Lokmanya Tilak Muncipal General Hospital in Sion, Mumbai for Ostomy patients as part of its social awareness and health check up initiatives being organised across the country. In association with Shraddha Charitable Foundation and Dr K Sethna, Consultant Oncology Surgeon convener of the camp, over 20 stoma patients from across the country were examined for a comprehensive free stoma care checkup. It also included a discussion about the newer techniques in stoma care for enhancing the quality of life of a patient and addressing lifestyle challenges. The objective of this camp was to provide guidance to the patients on newer and affordable techniques for stoma care that will aid them in leading a life with confidence.
Dr Sethna shared his experience, “It is very important that ostomy patients are regularly counselled about precautions and care that needs to be taken during changing and cleaning of stoma bags. The skin at the site of the stoma can become erythematous and fissured or can develop an allergic reaction to the materials used in stoma equipment. Through these health camps, our aim is to educate the patients to take care of the stoma and help them to negate the psychological worries about how the stoma will affect their relationships and social life.”
The patients were counselled about optimal skin care, dietary regimen and assistance with changing the ostomy appliance. The camp included examination of skin and stoma conditions that was followed by the consultation. During the session, Dr Sethna mentioned that the cases of ostomy in India are growing and it affects more than 25,000 patients a year. He also discussed about some of the causes of stoma that are ostomy, gastrointestinal complications, cancer, urological disorders and radical cystectomy.
