For the first time the landmark 7th edition of the Dr Mohan’s International Diabetes Update was organised virtually by Dr Mohan’s Diabetes Education Academy, a unit of Dr.Mohan’s Group of Diabetes Institutions from July 24-26, 2020 at Chennai. This three day Update had extensive expert based panel discussions and talks on COVID-19 and its effects as well as its links with diabetes by eminent and globally renowned research scientists and doctors. Members of the Organising Committee – Dr V Mohan, Chairman, Dr Mohan’s Group of Diabetes Institutions, Dr RM Anjana, Managing Director, Dr Ranjit Unnikrishnan, Vice Chairman and Dr Guha Pradeepa, Organising Secretary of the Update, conducted this Update on behalf of Dr Mohan’s Diabetes Specialties Centre.
The ‘Guests of Honour’ at the inaugural function were Dr Ashok Kumar Das, Consultant, Department of Medicine & Endocrinology, Pondicherry Institute of Medical Sciences, Puducherry, Dr A Muruganathan, Governor, American College of Physicians(ACP), India Chapter, Dr Shashank Joshi, President, Indian Academy of Diabetes, Dr SR Aravind, President, Diabetes India, Dr Anil Bhoraskar, Scientific Secretary-Diabetic Association of India and Dr Banshi Saboo, President of Research Society for the Study of Diabetes in India (RSSDI).
Dr.Mohan’s Diabetes Update will help in capacity building of doctors not only from all parts of India, but also from abroad. Delegates from various parts of the world including Canada, Philippines, Tanzania, Uganda, Nepal and other South-east Asian regions were a part of this conclave. Newer Therapies in Diabetes, Diabetes Care and Management, Co-morbidities and complications linked to Diabetes, Novel Subtypes of Diabetes in India, Advanced Technologies in Diabetes, Latest Trials in Diabetes and Gestational Diabetes Mellitus were some of the highlights of this symposium.
Commenting on the sidelines of the conference, Dr Mohan said, “Over the past six years, Dr Mohan’s International Diabetes Update has established itself as the foremost academic event in the calendar of clinicians, researchers, students and other healthcare professionals dealing with diabetes and its complications. This year the face to face conference had to be called off due to the COVID-19 pandemic but we are excited to launch this in an all new digital format. The meeting will witness sharing of ideas and insights, new advancements seen in the field of diabetes. We are delighted that amidst these challenges, we have not called off our annual event and instead converted into a digital format. This year we have many academic partners partake including the American College of Physicians(ACP), India Chapter, International Diabetes Federation (IDF) South-East Asia, Diabetic Association of India, Indian Academy of Diabetes, Diabetes India and Indian College of Physicians.”
Dr Unnikrishnan adds, “The three day deliberations will feature high-level speakers from India and rest of the world representing reputed institutes and medical centres, who will share their knowledge and expertise. This Update will enable participants to keep abreast of the latest innovations in the field of diabetes management and research. The scientific programme will be an academic feast including Orations, lectures, themed symposia and panel discussions”.
Dr Anjana says, “The main highlights of this Update includes novel subtypes of diabetes in India, newer therapies in diabetes, advanced technologies in diabetes, latest trials in diabetes, gestational diabetes mellitus and many more. In this Update we will be presenting the ‘Novel subgroups of type 2 diabetes and their association with microvascular outcomes in an Asian Indian population’. For the first time in India and South Asia, distinct ‘clusters’ of individuals with diabetes with significantly different characteristics have been identified. This classification of Asian Indians with type 2 diabetes into phenotypic clusters provides insights into the pathophysiological processes driving diabetes in this ethnic group which could help in predicting the risk of complications and in focussing attention on individuals with the highest risk of morbidity and mortality.”
Dr Pradeepa adds, “This Update will serve as a forum for exchange of clinical knowledge and advances in the field of diabetes healthcare and research. For this edition, more than 24000 delegates had registered and we have over 75 National and International Faculty working in the field of diabetes contributing to the scientific programme.”
