’Our management’s objective is focused towards providing international class healthcare at affordable cost across society’
CMRI has established itself as a leading multi-speciality tertiary care hospital in this part of the country. What are the factors behind the success of CMRI?
Rupak Barua |
The Calcutta Medical Research Institute (CMRI) has been taking care of the citizens of eastern region, for nearly five decades now. Since its inception, our commitment and focus has been to provide quality healthcare at affordable cost.
In our pursuit to provide international class healthcare facilities we are in the process of constantly upgrading our processes and investing in upgrading our existing infrastructure.
Our efforts have been complimented and recently an independent survey has rated CMRI as the second best hospital in Kolkata in terms of patient care and safety. We are happy that the medical fraternity and the patients, who voted for the survey have reposed faith and confidence in our efforts to provide world-class healthcare facilities.
Can you elaborate on the factors?
Sure! in order to provide world-class healthcare services to the people in this part of the country, we are in the process of re-engineering our operation methodologies. Currently, a business process re-engineering (BPR) framework is being implemented at our hospital to address specific problems that were plaguing our healthcare delivery processes.
The main purpose for business process re-engineering at different levels of the hospital’s operation line is to improve the efficiency in terms of patient care and safety.
Based on the methodology used, it was possible to identify a number of grey areas and operating systems for improvement, which have been since rectified.
To make the process fool-proof, we have initiated regular ‘Process Audit’ and are in the process of implementing new protocols as per requirement.
To make the hospital process driven, we are making investment in our IT backbone. CMRI has also hired the services of top-notch global IT companies to prepare the future road-map.
We are going to implement advanced ‘Hospital Information System’ (HIS) software to promote digital transparency in patient care.
Tell us about the accreditations achieved by the hospital?
The CMRI is an ISO 9001: 2000 accredited hospital. It is the second hospital in the country to have accreditation from College of American Pathologist (CAP) for its in-house pathology lab. It also has NABL certification to its credit. The hospital is soon going in for NABH accreditation.
What are the key strengths of the hospital?
Our biggest strength is the highest standards of medical treatment provided by us to all sections of the society at best value-for-money costs. CMRI, which was the first private corporate hospital of the city, has established itself today as the most advanced multi-speciality tertiary care hospital offering the most advanced medical services available.
Besides, the 12 operation theaters have been modernised to suit international standards and with the help of laminar airflow system they are now protected from any kinds of infection threat.
CMRI offers a variety of ‘Centres of Excellence’, such as Neurosciences, Urology, Gastroenterology, Oncology & Onco-Surgery, Cosmetic & Skin Care Clinic, Eye Care in association with LV Prasad Eye Institute of Hyderabad, Orthopaedics & Joint Replacement, Mother & Child Care and Pathology.
Apart from the regular multidisciplinary departments, the hospital has introduced super speciality departments to combat new age diseases like sleep apnea, obesity and stress management. The city’s first ‘Stroke Clinic’ was inaugurated at CMRI with a view to provide comprehensive stroke care with latest clot buster treatment or thrombolysis.
The Radiology & Imaging Department is run entirely by picture archiving and communicating systems (PACS) which allows it to access information in a highly efficient manner from almost any location, using secure web-based software.
The hospital has introduced eastern India’s first sleep laboratory for conducting sleep study.
Tell us about your community service initiatives?
Since its inception, CMRI has always taken active participation in community development programmes to serve the society in the best possible way. Suryodaya, the ophthalmology department of CMRI is actively involved in various such activities. It runs a ‘mobile eye care unit’ to cater to the needs of the downtrodden people of the society. Suryodaya, is also actively involved in free cataract surgery programme to eradicate cataract from a specific Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) ward.
CMRI is dedicated in its commitment towards the society. It has further extended the vision of community service by educating the society towards trauma care where it matters the most – the pre-hospital scenario.
