SRCC Children’s Hospital performs India’s first of its kind Intracardiac repair with Bentall operation

In the last one year, the hospital has performed operations over 500 children for various cardiac disorders

SRCC Children’s hospital, a super speciality tertiary care paediatric facility at Haji Ali managed by Narayana Health, showcased a successful case study of India’s first of a kind ‘Intracardiac repair of tetralogy of fallot with Bentall operation’ on a 14 year old boy.

Dr Pradeep Kaushik, Senior Cardiac Surgeon, Narayana Health SRCC Children’s Hospital, identified this child with abnormal function of heart and adopted the Bentall procedure which is a cardiac surgery operation involving composite graft replacement of the aortic valve, aortic root and ascending aorta, with re-implantation of the coronary arteries into the graft. This operation is used to treat combined aortic valve and ascending aorta disease. “This kind of case is happening for the first time in the world. There has been no past record in medical journals all over of such combined successful operations,” Dr Kaushik said.

Dr Kaushik who has operated upon thousands of kids to correct heart disorders, commented further, “The current comprehensive pediatric heart programmes in India are insufficient to take care of the massive national burden. Plus, most of these are in the private sector, with a limited capacity to subsidies costs of care. Generally parents are lacking in healthcare awareness and the need of the hour is of quality healthcare and treatment for children.”

In the last one year, the hospital performed operations over 500 children for various cardiac disorders. In fact, the hospital under the guidance of Narayana Health have done cardiac camps across Maharashtra at Mumbai, Pune, Nashik, Sangli, Kolhapur,etc.

Dr Supratim Sen, Senior Pediatric Cardiac Surgeon, Narayana Health SRCC Children’s Hospital who spearheaded the yearlong cardiac camps done across Maharashtra said, “These innocent children need immediate medical attention and due to their financial challenges they are not been able to get treatment. There are various government initiatives under which such children could be treated. We have treated over 70 per cent children with cardiac disorders through financial aids from the state government.”

The hospital announced free cardiac screening camp between September 29 to October 6 for children on the occasion of World Heart Day.
